You probably don't need to ask what is Android.  Android Phone is available at home in India today.  Android has become a very important mobile platform in the whole world by improving itself in a very short time.  By the way, many people will know about what is Android and what are its benefits, but there are many people who are completely new in the world of Android and who do not have any information about it.  In such a situation, this article will be very beneficial evidence for those people, along with those who have a lot of knowledge, they will also get to learn something new.

What is Android?

Android is not a phone nor an application, it is an operating system that is based on the linux kernel.  If I say it in easy language, Linux is an operating system that is mainly used in server and desktop computer.  So Android is just a version of Linux that has been created after a lot of modification.  Yes but it is related.

Android is an operating system that was designed keeping the mobile in view.  So that all the functions and applications of the phone can be run easily in it.  Whatever you see in the phone's display are all part of the operating system.  Whenever you get a call, text message or email, your OS processes it and presents it to you in readable format.

 Android OS has been divided into many versions and according to their features, operation, stability, which have been given different numbers.  So if you have ever heard a name like Android Lollipop, Marshmallow or Nougat then let me tell you that all these are different version names of Android OS or Operating System.

 Android Inc.  History of


 Android Inc.  The original creators of Andy Rubin, which Google bought in 2005, and after that they were made the core of Android Development.  Google bought Android because they felt that Android is a very new and interesting concept, with the help of which they can create powerful but free operating system and which later proved to be true.  With the help of Android, Google got a good reach of younger audience and with this, very good Android employees also joined Google.

On March 2013, Andy Rubin decided to leave the company and decided to work in his second project.  But even after this, there was no ups and downs in Android, and Andy Rubin's vacancy was filled by Sundar Pichai.  Pichai, who hails from India, used to be the head of Chrome OS before and his expertise and experience was well used by Google in this new project.

 Android is a great mobile operating system


 Android is such a great mobile operating system that has been made by Google, if seen, the software made by Google is used in almost all mobile phones in the world today.  Except Apple's iPhones only.  Android is a Linux-based software system.  As Linux is an open source software and with it it is also completely free.  This means that other mobile companies can also use Android Operating Systems.  The distinguishing factor in this is that this brand's kernel.  Hosts Android's Central Core, which is essentially a strip code and helps the software to operate.

 I think all of you must be using Android Phones, or even using Tablets which use Android Operating System.  Let me tell you that Android was developed by Google and Open Handset Alliance.  After that Android has been releasing its brand new versions since November 2007.  One interesting thing is that Android Versions is given a special code name and is released in alphabetic order.  This work is being done since April 2009.  Its different names are such as Cupcake, Donut, Éclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice cream sandwich, Jelly Bean, KitKat, Lollipop, Marshmallow, Nougat, Oreo and Pie.  You must have come to know by looking at the name that it is named after desserts from all over the world.


Android Versions and their features


 Now I am going to tell you about different versions of Android Operating System so that you will know what changes Android has brought in different versions.

 Android Beta


 It was the first Android version and was released in November 2007.

 Android 1.0


 This was the first commercial version released on September 23, 2008.  It had many features such as Android Market application, Web browser, zoom and plan full HTML, and XHTML web pages, cameras support, access to web email servers;  Gmail;  Google contacts;  Google Calendar;  Google maps;  Google Sync;  Google Search;  Google Talk;  YouTube;  Wi-Fi etc.

 Android 1.1


 This version is also known as "Petit Four" and was released in February 9, 2009.  The longer in-call screen timeout feature was by default when you use the speakerphone.  Along with this, there was also the facility to save attachments of messages in it.

 Android 1.5 Cupcake


 This Android 1.5 version was released on April 30, 2009, and was based on Linux kernel 2.6.27.  This was the first version that was named after a dessert.  This updated version had many features such as support for Widgets, third party virtual keyboard, video recording and playback, animated screen transitions etc. and with it you could upload videos to YouTube and photos to Picasa.

 Android 1.6 Donut


 It was released on September 15, 2009, and was based on Linux Kernel 2.6.29.  This version had many such features as multilingual speech synthesis, gallery, camera, camcorder etc.  With this, it also supported WVGA screen resolutions.

 Android 2.0 / 2.1 Eclair


 Eclair was released on October 26, 2009, which was based on Linux kernel 2.6.29.  This change also had many features like expanded account sync, Exchange email support, Bluetooth 2.1 support.  With this, by tapping the contacts photo in it, you could also call, SMS or email someone, with it, there was also the facility of search all saved SMS and MMS.  Along with this, other features like new camera features, improved typing speed on the virtual keyboard, improved google maps 3.1.2 were also available.

 Android 2.2.x Froyo


 Froyo means Frozen Yogurt and was released on May 20, 2010, and was based on Linux kernel 2.6.32.  It also had some new additional features such as integration of Chrome's VS JavaScript engine into the browser application, improved Microsoft Exchange support, improved application launcher, Wi-Fi hotspot functionality, quick switching between multiple keyboards etc.  In Froyo, you also supported Android Cloud to Device Messaging service, Bluetooth enabled car and desk docks, numeric and alphanumeric passwords.

 Android 2.3.x Gingerbread


 December 6, 2010, Gingerbread was released, based on Linux kernel 2.6.35.  It had many features like extra-large screen sizes, faster text input in the virtual keyboard, enhanced copy paste functionality, support for Near Field Communication, New Download Manager.  etc.  With this, Gingerbread and many other things were supported like multiple cameras on the device, improved power management, concurrent garbage collection etc.

 Android 3.x Honeycomb


 This version Android 3.0 was released on February 22, 2011.  It was based on Linux kernel 2.6.36.  It had a new virtual and "holographic" user interface with which added system bar, action bar and redesigned keyboard were also attached.  Along with this, other features like multitasking, allows multiple browser tabs, provides quick access to the camera, support video for chat using Google Talk were also available.

 Android 4.0.x Ice Cream Sandwich


 The Ice Cream Sandwich version was publicly released on October 19, 2011,.  Its source code was made available on November 14, 2011.  Folders could easily be created with the help of this version, separation of widgets in a new tab, integrated screenshot capture, better voice integration.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean


 Google released Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) in June 27, 2012, and was based on Linux kernel 3.0.31.  The main objective of this version was how to increase the functionality and performance of the user interface.  This version has many features like bi-directional text, ability to turn off notifications on apps, offline voice detection, along with Google Wallet, shortcuts and widgets, multichannel audio, Google Now search application, USB audio, audio chaining etc.

 In its second version, which was 4.2, it had many new features such as new redesigned clock app and clock widgets, multiple user profiles, Photospheres, Daydream ScreenSavers etc.

 Android 4.4 "KitKat"


 Google released Android 4.4 KitKat in October 2013, along with the Nexus 5 Smartphone.  This is the first time in the history of Google that Google has partnered with another brand for Android mascot.  Yes friends Google did a huge marketing campaign with Nestle to promote KitKat.
 The main objective of the company was to make this new OS even more efficient, faster and less resource intensive.  This OS could also run in low-end hardware and older hardware so that other manufacturers could use it in their existing models.  This also gave them more encouragement.  It also had some very special features about which I have mentioned below.

  • Full-screen apps
  • Unified Hangouts app
  • Redesigned Clock and Downloads apps

  • Productivity enhancements
  • HDR+


Android 5.0 L


 When Android L was about to be released, there was a lot of whisper among the people about its name, some were giving it Licorice, some Lemonhead and some were giving it the name of Lollipop.  And when it was released on October 15, 2014, it was named Android Lollipop.  Many such features were adopted in it, which earlier were not mehjud in it.


  • Better material design, excellent color interfaces, playful transitions and more.
  •  Multitasking was redefined so that it could work even better
  •  Some changes have been made in the notification so that you can view all notifications simultaneously in HomeScreen and can also cancel it.
  •  Best Battery Life
  •  This mobile Os has not only been limited to the phone itself, but now Android Wear has also been promoted so that you could use it in your hands.


Android 6.0 Marshmallow


 This Android version was released on October 5, 2015.  It was very similar in appearance to the previous Os.  But some important changes were brought in it which made it somewhat different.  I have mentioned below about some such features so that you can get more information about it.


  •  With the help of Google Now on Tap, you can do other work without closing any app.  In this, you just have to press the Home button for a long time and Google Now will be overlay with your current app.
  •  There was a slight improvement in Cut & Paste.  So that the user has ease of use.
  •  From Voice Search directly Lock Screen, previously only camera and emergency call could be made but now Voice Search can be done easily with it.
  •  Great Security
  •  Changes in App Permission, in which earlier users had no rights over it, means that users could not change it but now it can be changed for which you must first go to Settings> Apps> [tap a particular app]> Permissions  Features can be turned on and off.
  •  Google Setting in one place
  •  For Smart Lock Passwords
  •  Better Power Saving Options for which you have to follow this path Settings> Battery> Battery optimization (available via the menu in the top-right corner)
  •  New UI tuner setting
  •  With this, you can also easily edit the Quick Setting Menu.


Android 7.0 Nougat


 Android Nougat was released with Google’s Pixel (Pixel XL) phones on October 4, 2016.  It had a lot of exciting features that were not useful in earlier Android Versions.

 Night Light through which you can easily fall even at night without any trouble
 For fingerprint swipe down gesture, all you have to do is swipe your finger across the screen

  •  Circular app icons support

With this, some special features were also made available for Google's Pixel users.  for example
